Lab Certification Program

Earn objective recognition for measurable RF performance.

The Microwave Analytics Lab Certification Program introduces a structured, tiered system that recognizes amateur radio equipment demonstrating verified technical excellence under laboratory testing.

Bronze. Silver. Gold.

Performance is measured. Results are documented. Recognition is earned.

Bronze Certification Badge

Program Overview

Amateur radio operators may earn laboratory certifications in defined performance categories. Participants may also opt-in to public leaderboards hosted by Microwave Analytics.

Certification tiers are scaled by frequency band to reflect real physical and measurement limitations. As operating frequency increases, devices approach transition frequencies, passive components exhibit lower effective Q, transmission-line effects dominate, and measurement uncertainty increases.

Performance thresholds therefore vary across HF, VHF, and UHF bands to preserve fairness while maintaining professional rigor. The intent is to reward sound engineering practice — not favorable physics alone.

Certification Tiers

Bronze — Reflects baseline technical competence and regulatory cleanliness. Most functioning, non-pathological equipment should achieve Bronze.

Silver — Recognizes strong engineering practice and above-average performance across multiple RF metrics.

Gold — Reserved for exceptional RF performance approaching professional and laboratory-grade equipment. Intentionally selective.

Impedance Matching & Return Loss

Averaged worst-case across operating bandwidth.

Tier HF (±100 kHz) VHF (±1 MHz) UHF (±5 MHz)
Gold < 1.1:1 < 1.15:1 < 1.25:1
Silver < 1.3:1 < 1.3:1 < 1.5:1
Bronze < 1.5:1 < 1.5:1 < 1.75:1

Transmitter Spectral Purity

Harmonics and spurious emissions at rated output power.

Tier HF VHF UHF
Gold No harmonic > -70 dBc No harmonic > -65 dBc No harmonic > -60 dBc
Silver No harmonic > -55 dBc No harmonic > -50 dBc No harmonic > -45 dBc
Bronze No harmonic > -40 dBc No harmonic > -35 dBc No harmonic > -30 dBc

Frequency Accuracy & Stability

30-minute warm-up, 10-minute observation window, peak-to-peak deviation.

Tier HF VHF UHF
Gold ±5 Hz ±1 ppm ±2 ppm
Silver ±10 Hz ±5 ppm ±10 ppm
Bronze ±20 Hz ±10 ppm ±20 ppm

Measurement Integrity & Uncertainty

All measurements are performed using calibrated instrumentation traceable to national standards.

Reported values include estimated measurement uncertainty. Certification tier is awarded only when the measured result meets or exceeds the published threshold by the applicable uncertainty margin.

Physical Recognition

Certified equipment receives a detailed report, a physical certificate, and a bronze, silver, or gold decal intended to be affixed to the device.

The certification program establishes an objective shorthand within the community for verified performance — reducing reliance on subjective claims and marketing assertions.
